A formal evening wedding on new years eve is just that-FORMAL-a longer dress is more appropiate for this occasion-this is a dress up event so you will probably be needing the whole shebang! new shoes, hair and nails done and a nice coat- you can't go wrong with black for an evening wedding especially on new years eve but add some sparkle with the right accessories , may be a wrap with in gold or silver , jewelry that has a bit of sparkle to it or try a deep red colored dress just keep it fancy!
if you are going with a date make sure he is wearing the right thing also, a tux sounds like it would work- you can ask other invited guests what they will be wearing too to get more of the idea.

i read the comment below mine and yes everyone has their own opinion but that dress is in no way formal enough for this eventremember formal, evening and new years eve!

Obviously, given the dropping temps out and the time of year, a longer dress would be more appropriate. However, you need not show up in a floor-length ball gown for Pete's sake! Just a simple little ditty below the knee should be enough. If you've got hips, you'll find comfort in a dress with a nice A-line that flows away from the body. Look for a dress with a nice (maybe layered) thick waistband to draw attention to your waist.
It's an evening event, so don't do white or anything like it. That's tacky, and a little rude. Black or, because you're dark-haired, burgundy/maroon will look fantastic on you. Do jewel tones in the earrings and try a shawl or something.
I see for you a dress like this

Only in a black. Not too low cut--tasteful and yet classic. A solid black and a dazzling wrap/shawl thing would look terrific!
Ultimately, you'll find what YOU like and you'll look amazing.
Good luck and Happy New Year.

Who's getting married? Are they stylish and love to party or more traditional and conservative? Where is the event?
I would take the soon to be husband and wife, as well as possible guests, into account when thinking about your attire. Also the location might dictate how much coverage you'll need, for example.
I always lean towards long lengths or a very elegant pant suit when thinking about a formal occasion, especially a wedding...but I think since it's New Year's Eve (a holiday that I associate with partying) you can go with a dressy dress in a shorter length.
Have a great time!

Dress - Let HER worry about the dress color. Feel free to dress hotter than the bride (see reason below). Besides, it's a sister thing. Gift - You're probably not obligated to get something new the 3rd time around - just re-wrap and re-gift whatever you gave her the 1st or 2nd time. Attendance - Weddings are an excellent place to connect with other folks who have to be there also (you saw Wedding Crashers, right?). You're lookin' extra hot anyway, so drink up, party down and try not to hook up with a close relative. ;)

longer dress would be more appropriate because its an evening wedding cover the kness like if you want something that comes right below them than thats fine too. just get something a lil elegant if its formal and make sure it covers you knees while your standing and also make sure it covers part of your arm. if it falls off the shuolder thats fine or if it covers most of the chest thats kool too

I suppose a long dress would be better. Its more lady like and more suited for your age. Short dresses are more for the teens and young adults, for when you go out to a disco or party etc.

No mini skirts! A dress at least just past the knees should do it. Longer the dress the better.
Don't outdo the bride.

depends on if you are single or married, if you are single I say a sassy short dress with an assymetrical cut to attract the young single men, a sassy long dress oftentimes distracts too much from the bride, but if you are married I would say a simple elegant long dress

Long, especially in winter, a short dress would look very inappropriate!

which ever dress you want to wear is OK and if anyone tells you different just tell the that you don't have to attend if they are gonna try and tell you how to dress.
