I am currently looking at the Dell E1705 notebook, but I am baffled over these two types of internet. Two cards are available, the "Intel PRO/Wireless 3945a/g" and the "Dell Wireless 1390b/g (54Mbps)." However, I do not understand the differences between the two of these. If you have an opinion on these, please tell me your preference.

Go with the 3945 a/g option if it's (likely) only a few dollars more... There are 3 main 802.11 standards you're looking at here, a, b and g. Not counting the very original 802.11 standard that only had 1 and 2 Mbps rates, 802.11b was first in 1999 and ran at 11Mbps in the 2.4GHz frequency range, then 802.11a which is not compatible with 802.11b but ran at 54Mbps in the 5GHz range. Finally came 802.11g in 2003, also at 54Mbps, but also in the 2.4GHz range and backward compatible with older 802.11b devices.

So if you go with the a/g, then you really cover all 3 a/b/g. By going with the a/g, you also have the option to use 802.11a devices down the road which is a benefit and worth the extra $10 or $20 because there are more channels to choose from and generally less interference. The b/g devices are much more popular, making this frequency more crowded and it's also shared with 2.4GHz cordless phones, microwave ovens, bluetooth devices, etc. So it's nice to have the 802.11a option, as many wireless devices now have integrated a/b/g.

Hi, don't get mix up with technical words. I will explain to you using soft words, no techs...

a/b/g are wireless standards that 's it.

When your are driving, you stop at red light, you drive when you get a green and keep alert when it is yellow. These are driving standards.

Again, a/b/g are standards and you have to know that g standard is faster than a and b.

g runs at 54MBps. b runs at 11MBPs five times slower than g standard is.

ok...that is the difference about speed.

Prices are another difference. You have to pay 10.oo maybe 15.oo more for a card with g standard...but the speed difference is pretty high. With 54MBPs you can surf happy. With 11MBPs...you can sleep before you open the web site you want visit.

ok guy....hope that helps you....good luck!
