actually, it was the early blues artists of the fifties. then white man picked it up, ran with it, changed it a bit and called it rock and roll.
we just call it rock these days.

It was neither of these two.
The first rock song is either "Rocket 88" by Ike Turner, or "Rock Around the Clock", by Bill Halley and His Comets, depending on who you ask.
The first great rock 'n' roller was the legendary Chuck Berry.
Two out of these three have obvious St. Louis ties, and yet Cleveland is the rock capital of the world. That's St. Louis for ya.

Elvis became the king, but it all started with the blues. Muddy Waters, James Brown, Little Richard, etc....

rock & roll was created when blues + country & western music were combined. bill hailey & the comets were the first artist to play rock & roll when "rock round the clock" was featured in the movie "black board jungle" disc-jockey "alan freed" was credited for coining the phrase"rock & roll" however the "andrew sisters" recorded a song in the 40's that contained the words "rock & roll"
