With all due respect.
Affirmative action wouldn't be necessary if there wasn't rac-ism, class-ism, sex-ism, blah, blah, blah. Please don't try and spin the issue.
The most offensive "ism" of all is "white" ego-tism, which definitely is what really needed to be abolished, not just slavery.
White men are not being discriminated against, period. They may feel weary, of being forced to be mindful of others existence and value (civil rights). A lack of total power doesn't negate all powers.
Yes, it was more convenient for them in the past to complete their personal objectives without being forced to take anything into consideration other than their own priorities, thereby making affirmative action necessary.
Although it shouldn't be used as an endless crutch by those who benefit from it either.
Also slavery lasted for several hundred years, and then another hundred or so until the civil rights movements in the 1960's, and then another few decades before affirmative action, so it is way to early to draw any real conclusions in my opinion.

My side bar to an above answer that reads:
[Affirmative Action is a classic example of good intentions gone horribly bad. I have been openly advised that I was passed
over for many jobs, particularly with the federal government because, "I know your very well qualified, but we need to hire
a minority." ]
Lady says:
If they NEED to hire a minority then logically and mathmatically everyone or most everyone else that they have already hired is NOT a minority. And ONLY because of legal sanctions the minority that they will hire will be hired, otherwise, YOU would more than likey have been the candidtate selected for the job based on your qualifications and non-minority status.
If it weren't for affirmative action minorities would be regularly looked over in the situation outlined above regarldess of their GPA, SAT, ACT, etc.

Affirmative Action is supposed to be a program designed to end racism, but isn't it really justifying racism by it's own actions. Its policies totally judge people solely on skin color and gender. That is discrimination in itself. Is discrimination the solution to resolving past discrimination? No, it's not. No program can be considered good when it hurts others. Affirmative Action tried to help minorities and women, but in the process, reverse discrimination has taken place. Now, white males are discriminated against. This can not be an affirmative program if there is a form of discrimination involved. Instead of choosing a candidate for a job or for school admission, because of one's color or gender, it should be because of their talents and abilities. The best any colored male or female should be selected for the job, or to get accepted into school. Why should some people get special preferences over others? It just isn't correct. There should be no special treatments, and no special preferences given to people. Everyone has the opportunity to advance in this country, you just have to take the initiative.

Is it just me or have some of you FEMALES forgotten that affirmative action helps more women than any minority race. Also, affirmative action doesn't revolve around blacks. It includes all races who aren't white. Why people are stuck on it being a black or white issue is baffling to me.

Aw, poor "white" men. Ran everything for hundreds of years, owned slaves, always had plenty of opportunities and if they didn't succeed it was just their own fault. Poor, poor white men.
Now they have to share opportunity with (gasp!) people with different skin color! And women! And (oh, no) even homosexuals! Discrimination! White men should be the only ones to have opportunity, dag nabbit! That's the way it was back then, and the way it always should be! How dare you demand I treat these other sub-par things as my equals and give them opportunity!
Yes, affirmative action will end when *everybody* treats *everybody* as equals. Just don't say that affirmative action causes white men to feel discriminated against -- white men have no idea what discrimination feels like.

Additionally, expected to work twice as hard, get more done,
and higher expectations than my counter-parts of color, yet
when awards are handed out, they go to persons of color. Promotions, awards, employment, should be collectively based on merit, knowledge, skills, and abilities, not racial quotas.
In many states, college entrance exams, SAT, LSAT scores, ect., require a much lower standard score for persons of color. What message is that sending to those applicants? "You're not good enough, so we've lowered the bar for you." I can't think of anything more racist.

Affirmative action will end when whites are in the minority. That way we won't get to whine about being held down by the man, or not given oppurtunities we don't deserve because of our skin color.

It's comments like yours that indicate that it is not time for Affirmative action to end. (One day it should & will). "We" don't seem to appreciate all of the "privelege" that we receive just by being who we are. I'd hate to have to experience the other side of things, because it is pervasive and it is nasty. Just remember in many places, you have the ability to become employed just being who you are. People that don't share your skin color, language, gender, sexual orientation etc. are automatically rejected (consciously or unconsiously). Harvard University has an excellent web site called Project Implicit. It is a fun/free test that checks out our various social biases. If you're interested, it is at www.implicit.harvard.edu

Affirmative action is legalized racism.
So as long as it's around, racism can't end.
