They find thermals of rising warm air and use them to spiral up. Then they glide until they find another thermal to lift up on.

Birds are lightweight creatures. Their feathers are designed to catch winds, and they are expert maneuverers. They ride updrafts, which are warmer air currents we on the ground don't feel because we're on the ground! Warmth rises.

The ride on warm air thermals... warm air that rises up, bouncing off mountains , hillsides etc.. , the birds hop on the air mass and go up up and away!
