The answer your teacher is looking for is A. Byzantine, because it was through this civilization that Russia acquired Orthodox Christianty.

However, if it were an essay question, I would be tempted to argue for the Mongolians, because I think the Mongol invasion contributed heavily to Russian cultural paranoia.

Various nomadic people ruled Russia in ancient times from eastern Europe and the Mongols. They were the Khazar's of Turkic origin, the Varangians, the Slavs and the Mongolians.
The term Rhos or Rus first came to be applied to the Varangians
and later to the Slavs. The Varangian Dynasty lasted for several centuries and later were affiliated with the Byzantine Dynasty or the Orthodox Church.

I agree I could argue the Mongol or even China if someone want to write a dissertation but I agree the Romans specifically the Byzantine empire!!!!
