Here is a story that has been passed down in my family by my great-grandmother who is originally from Sweden...
There once lived a toy maker in a small Dutch village. One year there was an early blizzard and all the crops were frozen and worhtless; consequently there was no money nor trade goods to get the children any presents to celebrate Christmas. So, the toy maker made small wooden toys and made an announcement that all the children should place their shoes outside of their doors and in the morning of Christmas there would be a surprise. So they did just that, the toy maker stayed up all night making toys for all the girls and boys in the village. When they awoke the next morning their shoes were filled with toys. All the children were ecstatic and thanked the old toy maker (whose name was Nicholas).
So there is the story I grew up with St. Nicholas, therefore to me St. Nicholas/Santa Clause was born. He is called many things in different cultures and in every culture there is a story
