MP3 is an acronym for MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 audio layer 3. MP3 is the file extension for MPEGaudio layer 3. Layer 3 is one of three coding schemes (layer 1, layer 2 and layer 3) for the compression of audio signals. Layer 3 uses perceptual audio coding and psychoacoustic compression to remove all superfluous information (more specifically, the redundant and irrelevant parts of a sound signal.)
Oh, and MPEG stands for Motion Picture Experts Group.

"Mpeg-1 audio layer 3"
I remember when I first heard of mp3s. I was like, "what the heck is that". I also couldn't understand why music wasn't being transferred across the internet before mp3s. But then I realized that mp3s made it possible for songs to be very small, which means they're easier to transfer from one place to another over the internet.

MP is taken from the Motion Pictures Experts Group who created the mpeg format of audio/video compression decompression Software, better known as codec.
MP3 is the third of that series created for greater audio clarity.

here you go strait out of wikipedia.
MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, more commonly referred to as MP3, is a popular digital audio encoding and lossy compression format, designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent audio, yet still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio to most listeners. It was invented by a team of German engineers who worked in the framework of the EUREKA 147 DAB digital radio research program, and it became an ISO/IEC standard in 1991.
