Well it can also be your fuel line or filter, You start with the cheapest repair and then go from there. how clogged does your air filter look? then check the fuel line and filter.

Check your air filter just in case but i would be more inclined to suspect wet and damp is causing shorting from the ht leads as a test, buy some ignition sealer it coats the leads with a layer of plastic and drives out any damp, if this works i would change your HT leads , it could also be damaged or corroded HT lead connection pull out each lead from the distriputor cap and check that they are clean and free from corrosion, another thing i can it may be is air leak in the inlet manifold check all air pipes into the inlet manifld to see if one is of them is cracked and broken , a inlet manifold gasket is another matter, one more thing i can think of is a partly blocked carbaretor primery slow running jet,
that is not a job for an inexperianced person but you may get passed it by removing the air filter , reving the engine then vamping the air intake witha flat hand (dont worry it will not suck your hand in) so that it blocks the air for a moment try that two or three times it somtimes works by disloging the

Heating the gas received't get the ignition you're searching for. present day diesel engines run a compressions ratio of round 20:a million as against a gas engine of round 9:a million. that's style of double the rigidity. a present day gas engine with an aluminum head might want to not take care of those pressures. Adapting an injection pump to belt pushed will be troublesome, because the belt stretches, you would lose timing. A majority of injection pumps are equipment or shaft pushed immediately off the cam equipment. to position in injectors in a gas head will require very custom aspects. The internals of the gas engine does not get up to the direct injection, and combustion of the diesel gas. you would maximum in all probability melt the piston, or bend/smash connecting rods less than the extreme pressures. What you propose is conceivable yet would fee tens of 1000's of funds in aspects and exertions, once you've spent $5000 and offered a sparkling diesel motor. keep your self the hassle, promote the gasser, and basically purchase a diesel out-correct.

It could be a bad timing belt or chain. When belts and or chains get old they get stretched and cause the timing to change at idle and cause fluctuation in engine speed. If it was the air filter U would have a loss of power . The engine wouldn't slow down then speed up.

air filter or intake tube clogged, blocked fuel filter or fuel line, rpm sensor on its way out. maybe mass air flow sensor.
air filter should cost you about £10 so try that first, easy to change yourself. fuel filter should be tried next and is around £10 - £15 and a little more tricky to change.
the others are a little more expensive and would be better left to a garage.

You most likely have a vacuum leak in the intake system, which includes all the vacuum lines and switches. Visually inspect for disconnected hoses or cracked vacuum lines. You might get lucky and find it yourself.

i could tell you all of the things that could be wrong with it but you could spend a lot of $ doing stuff till you found the problem. i suggest you take it to a reputable mechanic to diagnose the problem. they will find the problem and if they cant on their own, well thats why they have computer diagnostic equipment. good luck holmes. /<:}
