If you want to get an accurate likeness with the least amount of stress this is what you do. Buy one of those cheap art projectors, about $20. Have a good quality photo about 3" x 5" or so to put in the projector. Find a place on a wall where you can tape your art paper onto. Fiddle with the projector and photo until you have it the size and clarity that you want. Lightly sketch out all the proportions and details like eyes, mouth, and nose. Remove from wall and use the photo to finish rendering the person. This is not cheating, it is just a shortcut. Your finishing touch will render it beautiful.

Get a LARGE pad of newsprint paper,it`s cheap.Use a soft lead pencil and lightly sketch, not small strokes either, try to copy photos, always work from a photo or model, photos don`t move.
Practice.BTW the news print pad should be 18"x24",draw big,
see where the body parts are in relation to each other.
