ok. I am just dying to write a song. I started playing guitar like 9 months ago, and I am trying to make some beats and lyrics, but it just wont come to me. My guitar teacher goofs around with some scales, notes, and chords, and has like an awesome song right there on the spot. I'll i'm asking for right now is; how do you write decent lyrics, and notes for a song?

Please don't say "Let it come to you" or "Write about something in your life". I'm not the best at poems or turning things into music...

And can I please have some tips?

I can't help with the notes for a song (I don't play guitar) but for lyrics think of what makes you happy, what makes you sad, and work from there. But you just have to feel strongly about the topic you choose, it'll help if you've been though it before. It's like if you want to write a love song but you're not even in love it'll lose the 'feel' that's really important. If you really can't think of anything, I suggest writing about losing a friend or getting backstabbed by someone or the feeling of self-actualization or breaking free from something that has been holding you down or reaching for your dreams.

There's also looking to real songwriters for inspiration (you might have to look beyond Miley Cyrus's Hannah Montana image and listen to some who write real songs about their life and experiences).

If you like Disney Channel stars, Aly and AJ are decent songwriters and they write lyrical poetry (try their songs No One- OST from Ice Princess and Chemicals React). Take their example, and write poems (doesn't mind if they have a rhyme scheme or not) first before dabbling in song writing.

Take note: Song verses and stanzas are usually equal in syllables and similar. Then you can easily turn the poems into songs. But you'll need a repeat chorus, verses and bridge or just freestyle.

For the notes, get inspiration from classics (I've tried to alter the piano piece Fur Elise to modulate into a minor key and ornaments and came up with a pretty nice song). Or try arpeggios and broken chords.

Good luck!

Its got to come from the heart. What do you feel strongly about? What do you want to get off your chest? Thats where your lyrics need to come from. Follow simple ABAB rhyme schemes. Make sure your syllables are evenly distributed.

As for the guitar playing, try fooling around with chord progressions. You can't go wrong with switching Major Chords around, you can usually find something cool like that. The more you play the better you will get at writing. Good Luck!

Anyone who possesses creativity will tell you it isn’t like a light switch. You can’t flip it on and off at will. Sometimes you will have a burst of inspiration that keeps you writing well into the night. Other times, you’ll find yourself in a creative drought that feels like it will last forever.

To keep the creative juices flowing, draw inspiration from everyday people and places, and give yourself a change of scenery when you need it. Thwart writer’s block by expanding your horizons and making yourself write even when you don’t feel like it. Learn to generate ideas your audience will respond to.
