Syncopation really just means accenting the off beats of the drums. It is very important to be able to do. Slap bass is quickly striking the string with the inner part of your thumb. Red Hot Chili Pepper's bassist Flea and Korn's bassist do this a lot. It gives it a more accented and heavier feel.

For other uses, see Syncopation (disambiguation).
In music, syncopation is the stressing of a normally unstressed beat in a bar or the failure to sound a tone on an accented beat.

Syncopation is used on occasion in many musical styles, including classical music, but it is fundamental in such styles as ragtime and jazz. In the form of a back beat, syncopation is used in virtually all contemporary popular music.

[Slap Bass]
In music, the term slapping is often used to refer to two different though related playing techniques on the double bass and on the (electric) bass guitar.

Syncopation is emphasising the off-beat. For example, in 4/4 time you usually emphasise the odd beats - DAH dah DAH dah etc. emphaisising the first and third beats in the bar. If you syncopate, you play dah DAH dah DAH etc. It is used a lot in Jazz and Funk.

Slap - on an electric bass this is hitting the string with the side of the thumb, usually on a downstroke. This is frequently used in conjunction with pulling the strings upwards (away from the bass) with the fingers and releasing them. When you start, this hurts your thumb. It takes practice to get it right and needs perseverance, but don't do too much to start with until your thumb toughens up.

Syncopation is playing the off beat from the counting itself (usually done by drums) and slap bass is like using your thumb to strike the note.
