wired properly? Will the loads trip when you press the test button? They do and the reset button turns everything on. Could it still be miswired? Do I have to take it apart to check it?

I'm an electrician and I don't even know what the wiring is supposed to look like on the inside of a GFCI. I would assume the internals are wired correctly, unless it has been tampered with.

Another way you can test it is to get yourself a receptacle tester. You plug it in and it tells you if weather it's grounded correctly or not and they have a button that you can push that should trip your ground fault interupters, if they are working correctly.

The only other thing that I could suggest is making sure that the wiring for line and load are wired correctly, if it is a feedthrough GFCI. You should be able to trip the GFCI with the tester plugged into any receptacle after the GFCI outlet (including the GFCI receptacle itself).

GE makes a tester with a Gage on it and so does Sperry both also have a test button they cost about $6.-$8. and you can get one at any of the home improvement stores or at WalMart (of all places) It will tell you if its wired properly and if it is functioning properly.

use the tester. but also know if the unit is looped to fool the tester. this should be apparent if removed from wall after house panel circuit is interrupted. sorry just reread your question. yes you have to remove from wall if you want to be sure. yes the tester can be fooled quite easily witht he unit still working. electricity is dangerous and tricky. if you are concerned about the proper wiring dont take any chances. disconnect the main cutting all power from the house while investigating hookup.

turn power off. remove GFCI. make sure you are wired to the LINE terminals. black to hot/brass white to neutral/silver ground to green

re-install GFCI. turn on power. press RESET button. press TEST button. if GFCI trips you should be good to go. press RESET.

just because a device is new doesn't mean it is perfect working condition.

They are wired in parallel. And, NO, they will not trip being wired in the same line. Just make sure they are tapped with pig tails in the box, and not straight through. If you use one GFCI to power the next one, that is just redundant.

It will either function or it won't. If it is wired properly you can push the test and reset buttons and they will work. If you like you can also plug something in to see if it works.

When a GFCI is tripped off, everything 'down circuit' shuts off as well. That is perfectly normal operation.

get a continuity tester. Test AFTER you remove it from a power source.

GFI's DO go bad after time.
