In an act of clumsiness that I won't bore you with, I have managed to put a hole, roughly the size of the bottom of a Coke can in a door.

Are there any easy (for a plastering virgin) ways to fix this without having to go the expense of calling in a tradesperson?

Thanks guys

BONDO!!! It cures faster and bonds better. Find a piece of wood the same width as the hole but twice as long. Set a three inch screw in the center of it. this will be a temporary handle. You may have to make some adjustments on the length of the board to accomodate insertion into the hole. Center the board in the hole and install a small screw through the face of the door at both ends of the board. Keep them as close to the hole as possible. Make sure the screws are countersunk. Remove the temporary three inch screw. Bondo and sand. GOOD LUCK!!!!

If it's a hollow core door, you will need to put some backing behind it. I generally use either hot glue to glue a piece behind or contact cement or even screw a piece from the outside... (counter sink so you can cover it with your patch material). I've used BONDO for years to fix things and it has always been the fastest and easiest. I see the termite guys use it all the time for wood repairs.. big and small..... it sands realllllllllly easy... dries super fast...... 1 hour MAX in most cases... and can be recoated and sanded and painted and repainted and all that in 1/2 a day... best way to go.... BONDO would be my answer....

Wood putty does not dry properly. You say it's the size of a coke can. If it is not too deep, you can use sheet rock mud to fill the hole. This can be sanded smooth when dry or yu can texture it before it dries. I would recommend getting the powder and mixing your own that way you can mix it a little dry and it won't fall out. It will also set quicker.

wood patch compound, then sand until smooth and paint. You will have to put a backing on first to hold the compound on.

you will need to anchor something into the hole...thats a decent size hole...glue a large cap off something...a laugndry soap cap...something....that fits the inside the hole without protruding out...

then use wood putty....and fill in hole ......but....only fill it in a little at at a time.....allowing it to dry. you can use a wet towl to smooth it when its nearly done.....while its wet...

after its dry you will need sandpaper.
