I'm so old that I'm still using a Walkman cassette player. But I love my new CD's and want to play them as I walk or work. Help me decide. I don't even know what an Ipod is....or does!! Bill Gates said he didn't even have one!

An ipod is a mp3 and mp4 player that could hold thousands and thousands of songs on it, depending on the model. It's very convenient to carry all your tunes on one little device. It eliminates the CD's, the changing of the CD's, and carrying the CD's around. An ipod is great, but there are more mp3 players out there. I bet you know some people that have an ipod, all of the models function in the same way, only difference is the size and capacity. The upper model plays videos as well as music. See if the ipod is right for you first, then decide on it.

Some mp3 players to look at are as follow: Creative, iRiver, Toshiba, and Sony. I really like the new Sony mp3 player, since my itunes is out of whack. In case you are wondering, itunes is the software that acts like a jukebox, it's where you manage your music and buy videos and music.

Based on you question, I would have to say buying an iPod maybe be much more work than you would want to invest in a music player.

To make an iPod work, you need to connect it to a computer and run specific software to get all of your music into your iPod. But first you have to put all of that music into your computer, then you can put it into your iPod.

If you just want to be able to pop in a music CD and listen to it without much hassle I would definitely stay with the portable CD player. If you are adept at using a computer or have someone willing to help you set up the iPod with all of your music (warning, it is very time consuming the first time you do this) then an iPod has many, many benefits over a regular CD player.

These are the most obvious benefits so you can get an idea of why people like iPods so much:

*An iPod can store between 400 songs (for the smallest "iPod Nano, 2Gig") to about 6,000 songs (for a "video iPod, 30Gig" of storage). For each gigabyte, or "Gig", of space you can store about 150 to 200 songs.

*You can browse to any song very easily, it is similar to flipping through a collection of vinyl LPs. Very easy and simple to navigate to what you want using the built in screen.

* some iPods are much less prone to skipping while playing music, others will never skip at all.

*No need to worry about scratched CDs becoming useless.

*Battery life on an iPod is about ten times longer than a portable CD player. Since the battery is built-in, you never have to change batteries, you just plug it into a wall socket to charge up the iPod when not in use.

--------------------------------------------------

There are other makes and brands available beside iPods. For someone that is not into all the technical details, the iPod is definitely the best bet. It is the standard as far as this class of music device is concerned.

iPod will do best. They're great. Pick a not too pricey one, like a Shuffle or Nano. Basically, you need iTunes to do this. So once you buy your iPod, insert the software and it will be downloaded. Then you can put your CD's in that slot on your computer to download them onto iTunes. Or you can buy from their Music Store. And then, use the directions to upload your iPod. It's not too elaborate---I had some troubles, but it was reasoanbly easy. All music should go on ONE computer, though. Make sure of that. If you need help with anything, ask a younger, more tech-wise friend.

From then on, charge your iPod by plugging in the wire that came with it into the iPod, with the other end on your computer's USB port. Charge it overnight for best results. Battery life now for the iPod Nano can last up to 24 hours without charging, so they're pretty great.

Downsides are sometimes the iPod will be pricey. It depends on their model. Also, they are harder to deal with. And yes, you must have a computer to ahve an iPod. Other than that, they're great. Once I brought my iPod with me to a five-day-long trip to Pebble Beach. I listened to it on both rides in the car---the entire drives up and back!!!!! AND during the days when at the resort. I didn't have to charge it ONCE. Amazing, huh? The key is to just charge it for a while to get lots of battery before a long-term use. And also ti press down on the pause key until the screen turns off. (That's how you turn off the iPod.)

An ipod is an mp3 player. an mp3 is a music file.

An ipod is nice if you don't want ot have to carry around all of your cd's ;but you will need to have a computer and internet access to put the music on your ipod.

You can take the music you have on cd and transfer it to your ipod throuhg your computer with the itunes program. If you want any music you don't already have on cd you will need to download it off of the internet. You can either pay for it through i-tunes or try and download it else where on the internet (where you can risk computer viruses at best and legal action at worst if you pirate).

If you aren't very tech savy or don't wnat to deal much with a computer an ipod probably isn't best for you. It does have the advantage if you want to use it while jogging or exersicing that na ipod won't skip like a cd player. whit wanting to use it on a walk to work i think a cd player would be fine for you.

I love my ipod and use it alot , but before i got it i loved my disc man just as much, it really depends on how much $ you want to put out and how involved you want ot get . if you have no mp3's and aren't very good with the computer i would get a cd player for now and look into ipods alittle more

If you don't know what an Ipod is, I would suggest getting a CD player, Much less stress. If you get an Ipod you would have to learn to get music off the CDs and onto your computer, then from your computer to your Ipod...Then what if somthing goes wrong? Ipods are also much more expensive then a CD player. Hope I was able to help. :)

First of all ... Do what you are comfortable with ... Mp3 players are the way to go ... They are small and hold so much more information than a CD . You can carry your entire library with you , in one small package . Also CD's skip on impact and scratch quite easily. But if you are not at ease on the computer you may want to just stick with the CD .

Don't get an iPod. It sounds like you're too old fashioned, and seriously, that would just be a lot to deal with. It takes a while for most people to figure them out... and you'd have to convert all of your cd's.

Just get a portable cd player that's good enough for you.

Try a sony walkman w/ radio.
A good one is about $50 +

Goodluck.

IPod's are great! I would recommend the IPOD Shuffle for you. When you buy a CD, how many songs are on the CD that you really like? With an I pod you down load songs at $.99 each and of course, you only download songs you really like. And the little IPOD which can fit in the palm of your hand, can hold a ton of songs. You can set the IPOD to play the songs in order or you can set it to play them shuffled up randomly. I love my IPOD shuffle.

The reason Bill Gates said he didn't have one is because he is the Microsoft's co-founder, and Microsoft's arch-rival is Apple, who manufactures iPods.

An iPod is a portable MP3 player than can hold up to 20, 000 songs depending on which model you choose.

Portable CD players are limited to music formats.. They are not designed to play flash or mpeg files. More current players will recognize and play mp3 files but older players will only recognize and play files in wav (audio CD) format.
