The famous international quartet are NYC, London, Paris and Tokyo, so that's one reason London is likely to produce the closest British equivalent. It's also the only British city with a similar population (the second-largest British city is Birmingham, with a mere 1.5m). But you're really asking about the types of people here, not how similar the cities are (although that will be related). London is officially the most cosmopolitan place on earth. Fewer Londoners actually come from London than New Yorkers in NYC. You'll find them less homogeneous than New Yorkers (not that they're particularly homogeneous). Residents of both cities get moulded by fast-paced, stressful living, bad congestion, high wages and high prices (with nothing left over to save). On the whole, I think people in both cities are friendly, considering their stressed-out lives. New Yorkers are a bit more blue-collar than London (which is service-sector mad). Their women are both shopping mad/dating-obsessed/ambitious career-wise.

The nearest Brit to a New Yorker would be a resident of Wormwood Scrubs. Even there, most are superior in all ways to New Yorkers.
