My son took the new SAT test in his junior year of HS ... he's now a freshman at college. Indeed, there are three parts totalling 240 (sort of the equivalent of 2400) points now. I hear/gather that many colleges are not using the writing portion heavily because they aren't yet sure how indicative it is of future academic success at their school.

That said, my son did very well, had prepped for it, and didn't have trouble with the essay. Rumor has it the readers only look at the essay very briefly. And one of the "SAT coaches" I talked to said the essay is actually the easiest thing to "teach" someone how to execute/score well. It's a maximum of 12 points (for the essay) out of a total of 80 for that one writing portion.

I believe a 1600 is a perfect score on the SAT...unless the writing portion makes the potential score higher? Sorry, I took the SAT a long time ago. Not many people like to take tests..
