You have two points on a line: (2, 5) and (3.5, 74.35). So, get a slope:

(74.35 - 5)/(3.5 - 2) = 69.35/1.5 = 46.23

Now use point/slope:

y - 5 = 46.23(x - 2)

y - 5 = 46.23x - 92.47

y = 46.23 - 87.47

Are you sure you copied the problem right? If it were $50 for two hours work, it would make more sense. According to this equation, if he just shows up at your house and does no work, he owes you $87.47.

Diane is right.
If the question stated $50 for 2 hours, the equation works out to

16.23 x + 17.54 = y

So the plumber charges $17.54 flat rate per visit plus $16.23 per hour.

x = 2, y = $50
x = 3.5, y = $74.35
