It's good that you're trying to take responsibility as this was your fault. The first thing you should probably do is settle on a value so you know what you owe and can start to make arrangements on how to do it.

I am guessing you don't have insurance since you've not mentioned that... but if you do, you should have them involved. As for his insurance? Since his making a claim would likely send his rates up, it's understandable he may prefer settling this directly with you. And, as it's your fault, his insurance company may simply pay him and then sue you to get their money back (and they will most likely be more pressing about how quickly you will need to pay them).

If you and your friend can settle this, do it. But be very clear with each other and put it in writing. Research what the car was worth and agree on a total amount, and payment schedule. Sign it, get copies and then live up to the terms you've agreed to and you should both be happy.

Even though you weren't on his insurance policy, his insurance covers anyone that doesn't live in his residence that he allows to drive his car. I work in insurance and this is how I know this. This may make his insurance go up a little bit, but you could offer to pay the difference. I would also offer to pay the deductible, and for his rental car while his car is getting repaired or until he gets a new one.
