Knights.
They backdate to 9-10c AD and were born along feudal society (but yet Charles the Great had something of similar in 8th cent.).
Japanese (not chinese!!!!!!!) Samurai came later.
They or katana swords didn't existed in Heian Age (more or less 8th-13th c.)(1)

Ok I am not an expert but they could have been at the same time. Heres how Samurais are an Asin Culture based. So they kept to themselves no one at the time messed with China. But they were also known as knights. Called Samurai knights.

Pretty much contemporary... according to Wiki, Samurai became established c. 1160 and exising well into the 19th century, with "proto-Samurai" existing some 5-600 years prior. European knights were first mentioned around the same time... c. 1100, though probably existed a while before being written about, and exist in a vestigial manner today.

Samurai as the Orientals had a civilization far in advance of Europeans although this was not commonly known until exchanges started taking place between the two cultures
