The ache from what could never be is worse by far.

The ache for what can never be may not be worse, but it sure hurts more than the ache for what could have been because there is always a possibility there. What could have been has passed, and I never say never.....to what could be....... ;)

Hands down: what could have been. If something can never be it is more easily accepted. It's one of those "it wasn't meant to be" situations. However, that which could have been... maybe even should have been, is the most painful. Everything is there, the potential is just waiting and then something goes wrong.

The ache for what could have been.

You can't really feel bad about something that could have never happened in the first place.

But when it's something that could have happened and it didn't :(

No words to express the sadness.

I noticed most people put, "what could have been", and I often wonder that, but I find the desire of "what could never be" stands stronger in my mind than the other. The former statement, to me, is always present, but the latter...seems less often, but when it comes...it hits harder than even I could have ever imagined.

What could never be, because when I look back at what could have been, I always find a way to forgive.

If you choose to relive past sufferings then you are just enduring in your own pain...which is stupid. Live in the now, chin up, and get over it. Sorry to be a hardass, but maybe something not "candy-coated" will knock in some reality. Yes, life is pain. Learn from your experience, and move on. If you choose not to learn from this experience, then you are doomed to repeat it.

What could have been. You can see the potential but maybe the timing was off or the other person didn't engage, whatever.
