The laser reader has probably gone bad. Unless it is under warranty you will probably have to pay top $$$ to get it fixed. I know people who have had this type of problem. Usually the optical drive has to be replaced.
If you haven't done so, try cleaning it with a special CD cleaning kit.

Start with cleaning the lens on your PS2. I found this in 10 seconds using a quick search.
I've taken my PS2 apart several times over the years when I had this problem, and each time cleaning the lens with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol did the trick.

You may need to clean the lens. You can buy a kit at anywhere that sells playstation consoles.

Clean it with a cd/dvd lens cleaner, maxell makes one. If that doesn't work you are screwed, so I would then try and sell it to video game store for at least credit towards a new one.

Sony will usually fix this for free if you apy shipping, probably laser. Call them.
