I do. They loved every second of it.
Yes, it was a big news event, but they virtually salivated over every little bit of info.
And yes, I know I'm about to be called a heartless, insensitive bi*tch by people who haven't read the question. Bring it on.

Can I just add that I used to be a journalist myself - they LOVE stuff like this. Their coverage was disgusting, in my opinion.

No, you didn't offend me at all. Just not sure what the difference is. Believe me, tabloid hacks really couldn't care less about people's lives - they enjoy big, sensational stories.

Sasha - don't answer questions you patently don't understand, you just make yourself look even more stupid (if that's possible).

they must have cared about those women's lives because the media never once said anything bad about them, in fact they focused on the women's pasts and families to show people that they too had people who cared about them and that they were once normal members of our society, having your life ruined by drug dependency can happen to anyone, the media i think were trying to get people to realise that these sorts of people aren't just NOTHING and if they can get everyone to understand this then prostitutes wont be so at risk of falling victims in the future.
also this crime got so much media coverage because serial murders in the UK are uncommon, especially when the people are killed in a rate such as those 5 women were, i think most of the country were shocked and in disbelief, and usually its the bad events like this which make people so interested and wanting to know more.
its what you call big news, so get over it, yes the media loved it but not in a bad way, and they were feeding most of the public what they wanted to know, apart from the small minority (you and crispy) don't worry maybe you will be able to make big news one day.
OK what ever you say, you know best. this question is far to intellectual for me, i should have known better then to answer it, cos your right, always the right one, aren't you so lucky.
WELL DONE in fact!

What people fail to understand is the news has become an entertainment media and not an informative one.
I remember the Yorkshire Ripper murders, sure it was headline news, rightly so but the story lasted 5 minutes and then they moved onto other important stories.
We have had this Ipswich story rammed down our throats 24 hours a day. I am sure its a huge local story, on a national level I would say its rather low key, who outside of Ipswich does it affect?
The media see it differently, its like a real life episode of Cracker. lets get people hooked on it, puts up our ratings, then we will get more advertising revenue.
Isn't it strange Sky news covered it much more than BBC news ... could it be one is more directly financed by advertising?
Back to your question I believe the media would have loved another murder, it would have boosted ratings by another 100k.
If people here really think they care about these women and their lives, it just goes to show how manipulated they are by them.
I bet they watch Jeremy Kyle too.
Its a waste of time trying to explain things to them Donna, let them live their lives in ignorant bliss, at least we can see the truth and don't fall for it.

Nice one Donna - it indeed was the media...but their audience consisted of socio-economic C2DE's who felt the same way in 1994 when Colin Stagg was accused of killing Rachel Nickell. For years thereafter he suffered assaults wherever he went, be it in his DHSS office, local pub or even to the shops - I'm glad Mr. Stephens has been given the chance to see the error of his wee ways - but like it or nor, the media will be after his rear day and night now, getting themselves up here to Norwich (where he apparently grew up) to wave wads of mucho dinero around in order to get old friends/partners - or just any punk who drunk with him in pubs - out of the woodwork to chat and spin the yarn until he's turned almost into a rip & roar sexual pervert who allegedly liked to do it wearing a WPC uniform whilst watching Jeremy Kyle/Bullseye/Newsnight - looks like he signed away his right to live (as he liked) as soon as he spoke to the Sunday Mirror. No - you're not heartless or insensitive - perhaps like most of us - you're amused at the hypocrisy, hmm?
Salivated...and more!
Yes, Glasgow girl...the media is indeed a powerful tool, as the Birmingham Six/Guildford Four - the list goes on - will tell us...unless hanging was still part of our punishment list (which most - and not only red-top gawpers - would like to see returned). Then the poor bastards would never have experienced the eventual outcome

Absolutely agree.
Publishing Houses and documentary makers are probably also feeling the same disappointment.
Don't think you are heartless or insensitive (or a bi*tch)...sensationalising such tragic murders as the Ipswich killings is big news.....had someone not been charged, as they now have, the media would have milked this story for weeks.

The media is a powerfull tool, you should know that, without them many a case like the Ipswich murders would not be solved, the police do not have he resources or the money to investigate some of these murders, they bring it to the forefront.

No I don't. Yes it was a good story as far as they were concerned, but only the gutter press would look for more. It doesn't matter what the girls were they were someones daughters and deserve some respect. There is a lot of heartache out there and they need some compassion. It is Christmas after all.

I read your question thoroughly, but I still think you're wrong. They liked THE STORY not the actual fact the girls were murdered
____
The difference is that you're implying they were salivating over the deaths themselves. I don't think they are. They're salivating over the money it'll make them, as tabloids. I think there's a difference.
If I've offended you, I'm sorry. I was just tryin' to explain it how I see it.

Oh some celebrity will get married or divorced and they can talk about that. Or someone will get paid to say something offensive so we do not have to learn about what is going on with the Iraq war or the white house. Perhaps another bride will runaway so we can make that world news.

The police have charged a 48 year old man with these murders, but don't jump the gun, he hasn't been found guilty yet, and the law says innocent until proven guilty. Don't Get me Wrong, I sincerely hope that they have got the right man, the sooner these murders stop, the better.

Frankly, it may seem like that but I am sure they are moving on searching for the next story. They can't live in the past, they just report it and continue forward.
