That means you are taking money, which can be used anywhere, and turning it into money, which can only be used at that establishment. Or am I a retard?

It looks like people are not happy either way.

I would give a gift card to someone I do not know
very well, because its a no brainer you have no clue
what to buy them. You can at least find out what stores
they like to shop at, then they remember they have a gift
card. Let's say someone gave you a giftcard to your favorite
store--vs-- they gave you a gift that you absolutely hate with no
receipt to return it. So, again giftcard or hated gift you probably
will never use or you'll regift. These are the things that make you go Hmmmm!

I only buy people gift cards to places that they would normally not go. If I gave a person money for christmas, not only would it be impersonal, but also they probably wouldn't spend it on something special. They would spend it on food or their children. I would never give someone a gift card to a place like Walmart, because you can get anything there and that seems just as impersonal as giving money.

Tim, some people think that giving money is a little thoughtless. A giftcard giver at least shows that they narrowed the search among many stores.

I can only answer for myself. Every year, I buy my friend a guft card, either to a fancy clothing store, or for a spa treatment. She has 3 kids, very little money and is a great Mom. If I gave her cash, she would never spend it on herself.

I like to think she at least gets some pampering once a year :-)

That's very true. I don't believe in gift cards anyway. They are right there with a summer sausage gift basket or cash. It takes no effort or thought to pick out and shows that you couldn't care less about the person you are buying it for, but felt forced to do so.

From a logical standpoint, you're right. It makes little sense. I would prefer to get cash if nothing else. I'd be happier with a funny toy, a gift of almost any sort, or even some cookies. But, sometimes you (as the giver) just get stuck.

I never understood that myself, I believe it is a way of giving a gift without having to say I don't feel like taking out the time to buy you a real gift it takes too much thinking and giving cash would be that direct sign of laziness.

Usually people buy giftcards for other people, not themselves.
