it is a spinner game. here are the rules:(1) you take turns spinning the spinner. (2)if it lands on the white region, you get a point.(3)if it lands on the gray region, the other player gets a point. (4) the first person to get 20 points wins. do you think that the game is fair?
i don't think it is fair because if the first person lands on white all the time, then they can get 20 points first. so the first person gets an advantage. the second player has a 50/50 chance of getting into the gray area or the white area. the first person has a 50/50 chance of landing on the gray area or white area.BUT,the first person can get 20 points first. what do you think? the white and the gray areas are both half of the board.

It is fair assuming that the players don't cheat.
Since with each spin a point goes to SOMEONE, and there's an equal chance it goes to each player, it doesn't matter WHO does the spinning.
Your conclusion that the first player can get to 20 points first is erroneous, since the second player can score on the first player's turn. Which is just another way of saying the above.

If the spinner can control whether it lands on gray or white then the first player will always win. If the results on the spin is 50/50, like flipping a coin, then the winner will also be 50/50. To assure a 50/50 outcome most spinning games require that the spinner go around several times before stopping,

It is fair because the second player gets the point if the spinner stops on grey (this is assuming that the white and grey regions are equal and both outcome equally likely). So, if the first player lands on grey all the time -- which is as likely as landing on the white -- then the second player wins.
In fact, it would be fair even if only the first player spins all the time.
Your reasonning would hold only if landing on grey means no points for anyone, then the first player would have an extra turn.

The game is "fair" in that if half the board is gray and half white, there is always a 50% chance of either side getting the point. This is irregardless of who goes first.
This is different than say a game of chess, where white always goes first and thus always has a slight advantage at first.

Its fair because it doesn't matter who is spinning. On every spin, one player or the other gets a point.
BTW, "irregardless" is not a word. The word you wanted is "regardless". Adding other things to it doesn't make it better.

It sounds fair to me. Especially if they spin to see who goes first.
