House warmings are an old tradition to clear the house of cold, or bad energy and ghosts. The crowd and the celebration notifies the spirits that a new family has now claimed the house and that they have to move on.

How about this...When you buy a house or move into a new place, its bare, empty and rather impersonal. Guests (usually your close friends and family) of house warmings usually bring gifts either of things that you will need or things to make you more comfortable in your new home, giving it a more personal, lived in look and feel by default, warming it up!
