I'm moving to Guernsey soon, and am wondering if there's any place I can get yarn on the island.

Welcome to Guernsey. You can get crochet yarn from the Creaseys shop in Mill Street or The Wool Cellar at Cobo Village Centre. We have lost a couple of wool shops in recent years so there is less variety but these shops are helpful if you want anything special. My own shop is more into cardcraft and scrapbooking supplies but we do keep some embroidery yarns.

Re the first answer the jumpers known as Guernseys are indeed renowned but are made from a special oiled yarn. They were designed for fishermen and are very hard wearing, windproof and water resistant. Knitting was a major industry in Elizabethan times when a concession was granted to import English wool into the island. The pay was so good that almost the entire population was knitting, men, women & children and a law had to be passed to make people attend to their normal work first. We never kept sheep ourselves and it is only in recent years that a few flocks have been started in the island. Possibly knittingma is thinking of our unique breed of Golden Guernsey Goats.

I don't do much in crochet. I went to a group formed at my WI branch a couple of years ago but this had to stop due to the ill health of our mentor. There are many women in my local branch who could give you more information about local sources and I would be happy to introduce you at a meeting.

I am sure there are plenty of places in the Channel Islands to find yarn. Gurnsey is known for it's Gurnsey sweaters and sheep.

Try Interweavepress.com. They have listings for yarn stores in the US and I believe in the UK.
