The front of public toilet seats have a gap in them, and the toilet seats in my house do not. What is the reasoning behind that?

This might sound a little gross, but this is my understanding of it and I'll try to be as scientific as possible.

When someone sits down and urinates, the urethra (sp?) is slightly pinched off, leaving a bit of urine (a few drops) inside. When the person stands, the urethra is opened, and the remaining urine can be expelled. On the oval seats of a home toilet, it'll be expelled on the seat, which someone will need to clean to sit down on again. On the horseshoe seats, it's expelled on the toilet, reducing the amount the toilet seat needs to be cleaned.

That's my understanding of it. :-)

There are two different styles of toilets, the round and the elongated ones. (A few years ago, there was a third one by American Standard - but this is no longer produced.) The standardization of either the round or elongated toilets allowed for easy replacements for parts - such as toilet seats from your local hardware store.

The difference between round and elongated is pure preference. As a guy, I would prefer an elongated one.

The gap in the front of the public toilets is a sanitary issue. Most guys are slobs in the public restrooms and don't pick up the seat. The gap is supposed to help prevent a mess. (Doesn't work.)

I would venture that U shaped ones are easier to clean and maintain, while the O shaped ones allow young children to use them effectively.
If no one offers a better explanation...
