A friend of my sister recently had a baby girl. They named her, Alexis... the same name of the daugher of one of their other friends. Before naming their daughter, they did ask the other Alexis' parents if they'd mind and they said no. What's your take on this?

I think it is fine. They have named their child what they are happy with, it shouldn't matter that someone else wanted that name first.

If they are close friends, and the kids are around the same age, it's probably not the best. But if they are 'occasional' friends, or the other Alexis is older by at least 10 years, then I think it's ok. Regardless, sounds like it's over and done with? So why jaw about it any longer?? Move on. Can't change it now.

Well, if you had that name picked out, I don't see why not. It's your baby, so name your baby what you want. I personally try to pick names different than everyone I already know, but of course you will run into someone somewhere with the same name you want to use. Anyways, when I was 6 months pregnant, my husband and I decided on the name Ethan for a boy... well, a friend of my mom's had just found out she was pregnant and told her the names she had picked out were Ethan and Emma. (I personally don't care for these friends of my mom's- personal reasons- the guy was my brother's teacher- just a weird situation) Anyways, I was going to keep the name Ethan for a boy no matter what I had- I didn't find out so my baby was either going to be Hailey or Ethan, and ended up being Ethan. We came to find out they had a boy as well- but seemed to have chosen another name- Noah for a boy instead- not sure if it was because I already chose Ethan or what- don't think they care for me either lol. Either way, I don't really keep in touch with them at all- only my mom does, so if they named their son Ethan, I wouldn't mind because it was a name they had picked out as well. You name your child what you feel in your heart fits them, or what sounds good to you, and you think will sound right for the rest of their life! :)

Because they asked the other friends, that was nice of them, but they didn't have to... but they said they didn't mind, so I don't see a problem in any way.

I wouldn't do it. I wouldnt want to feel as though i copied...but if it was a name i liked before i knew someone else had used it, i wouldnt change my mind. A sad story....my sister had planned to name her baby girl Brandi...but announced it at her babyshower. My brothers wife ended up having her daughter premature and decided to use the name Brandi....my sister had 2 weeks to come up with another name because brothers wife beat her to it. It would have been stupid to have cousins with the same name. Its nice they asked permission....but i would try for a different name if the kids were going to grow up together, or were family...otherwise i dont think it matters much.

Who cares there are a bunch of girls named Alexis out there in the world. I wouldn't have even asked.

I believe the name is something just picked just because someone else has the name doesn't mean the parent was copying. Many people around were i live have the name Neo. This doesn't mean my mother asked every child named Neo if she could name me that she just did. It isn't like she named her child after that child.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. I wanted my children to not have the first names of any of my friends kids..its bad enough trying to keep track of them all as they play. Without adding an idenity issue over which one we are talking too.
I actually went to school with 2 girls in my class whose moms were friends..both are named Sarah...In school they went by the first name and last intial..yeah..when we were talking we actually said Sarah T and Sarah M...

i say you can name your baby whatever you want. if someone else that you know had a kid and named it a name that you wanted to use then go for it. who cares you might not even know those people later on in life.

Nobody "owns" a name. I think getting worked up over someone giving a name you used, considered using, or plan on maybe using in the future is a waste of energy. That's just my opinion.

I wouldn't name my kid the same name as a friend... but at least they asked. I would have just picked something else personally.
