I am from Las Vegas and live in San Francisco, so both of those are covered. What are some strange, off the beaten path, great American experiences?
I am looking for suggestions about events and locations.

How about the London Bridge in the Arizona desert? And the Apache Trail, from Globe (I think) to Phoenix - through the mountains. There are some Anasazi ruins there as well.

There's also the world's biggest McDonalds (it's built over a highway) - ah, the review I just saw wasn't too great. We have Derby here - and that's a great time to be in the area, but we're talking late April and May in Kentucky. Cumberland Falls, in the southeast part of our state, is one of the few places where you can see a "moonbow" if the time is right. And heck, you can go Kentucky Down Under and check out the kangaroos - hit Mammoth Cave, too.

You could make a trek to see the biggest ball of string, the largest frying pan and all that other good stuff as well.

Check out the website I located when I was looking for McDonalds. Have fun!

Cadillac Ranch, outside of Amarillo. And while you're headed that way, stop at the Teepee Curio shop in Tucumcari, NM. Tell the old hippie guy that owns the place my redhead just loves her authentic 60s Zuni Indian sliver, mother of pearl, and torquoise ring.

You could go to Four Corners - I've never actually been there but it is the only place you can be in four states at once (Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico).

The Mall of America in Minnesota.

There are many "Largest" sites - largest armchair, largest ball of twine, largest teapot, etc.
