Everyone is right! k stands for 1000, so 28k is £28,000 per year as a wage.
If K had taken over from the £ sign a) we would have heard abut it on the news!!! b) the k would be at the beginning of the number rather than the end and c) it would mean that the salary being offered was £28 per year - thats just over £2 per month!

It hasn't changed! The £ sign is still used and will always be for a long time I can imagine. The k as someone said does represent 1000 but that's not big or something to worry about. Anyway if you was referring to a k = 1000 then the pound sign is still use in front of the 1000 and the k goes after.

K means thousand,
A salary of 28K is £28,000.00 per year
A salary of £28 would be just twenty eight pounds a year - good in 1890 but not so good in 2006.

Doesn't "K" stand for 1000 in short? I have not seen the pound sign any other way than the "L" with the line in the middle.

It should say £28K
It means 28,000 (K for kilo - kilo being 1000)
The Sterling symbol has not been changed.
