At 9 hands (slightly over) it depends. If it is a shetland cross you can. If it is truly a very big miniature probably not they aren't put together as strongly as other ponies of the same size and have trouble carrying weight. Our 12 hand pony can carry 250 lbs all day long. The 20% rule just doesn't figure up or people wouldn't be able to ride double (or triple) on full size horses.

Most people don't realize you can do anything with a miniature horse that you can with a big horse except ride. And riding isn't out of the question for small children and grandchildren.
Please do research on the recommended weight limit for Miniature Horses, before trying to saddle yours up.

i'm afraid you're too heavy. a miniature can only safely carry 40 pounds. however, if your horse is part shetland or welsh (some rideable breed), it could most likely hold your weight. but if it's just a miniature horse all the way through, i'm afraid it wouldn't be safe or healthy for him :-(.
you should look into shetland ponies. you could probably get a cheap one that you could ride easily.
good luck!

There are some calculations out there to estimate the weight of a horse that are very accurate, look them up on the Internet.
Are you short as well as light? Because your height in relation to his is a limiting factor.
A 9.1 hand horse should be able to carry you, HOWEVER, you MUST make sure that the horses is relatively fit with decent enough confirmation. If he hasn't been at least turned out alot, then you have alot to do first. Work with him on the ground, and when you do get on, be sure to watch for signs that he is struggling. Also, make sure any tack you use fits BOTH of you. Heavy tack that fits is always better than light tack that doesn't

The rule of thumb to use is: the rider plus tack should not be more than 20% of the horses body weight. Example: 500lb horse, 20% of the horses body weight is 100 lbs. So you and your tack can not weigh more than 100lbs.
This rule applies to all horses.

My friends have tiny horses they ride and one of my friends mom even rides her's. if your pony has a prblem or you weigh morethen don't try it but if you don't weigh close to his weight then you would probly be ok.
