What is a good expectorant for infants? My daughter is almost a year old and has a really bad cough and the cold. I have her on Tylenol cold and cough and it really isn't cutting it ... any suggestions?

My daughter recently had a bad, wet cough and my doctor recommended Triaminic. It's the yellow stuff, the box says "Chest," and it's got psuedophedrine and guifenasin (I don't think I spelled either of those right), which will help break the crap up and help your daughter. My doc told me to give her half the 2 y/o dose.

BUT, always call your pediatrician to check first!

Expectorant For Infants

One of the best expectorants is steam.

It physically breas up the gunk that she needs to cough out. Plus, you can't overdose it and it has no bad side effects! =)

Sit in the bathroom with the shower running all the way on hot. THis will clear a blocked nose in minutes.

Likewise, a warm-mist vaporizor (never use "cool-mist", as these spread bacteria) will make breathing much easier and ease a cough. Making home-made soup or boiling a big pot of pasta will help get steam in the air, too.

At night, elevating the head of her bed a bit will make breathing easier. Prop a couple books under her mattress. (I find something about 2" works well without being too steep.)

Be careful with cold-medicines for the young-ones. They've been linked to increased risk of ear-infections (which is frustrating, because one of the reasons we GIVE them is to PREVENT further infections! Grrr)

Push the fluids. This will replace what her body's using to MAKE the mucus, and help her immune system fight the virus.

ADDITION: Saline drops? Personally, I don't like using them. (On myself.) It's a rather unpleasant sensation for me, so I haven't tried to subject my son to it yet when the steam works so well.

However, they are 100% harmless and work on the same principles as the steam (mechanically breaking it up, rather than being a drug).

NONE, only children over the age of 18 months should use any type of cold medicines, in younger children the medications don't do anything and can cause more harm than good.

Steam, with a few drops of eucalyptus oil. This should safely open her nasal passages. (Works for adults too!)

some of you are clueless. i guess you think you know more than childrens medical center. use adult meds and scale down the dose. kids meds are a trick to get your money. those that are saying saline drops, vaporizers or steam, are correct.
