is there any software out there that i can download for free ,that might allow me to complete this.

Are you sure you didnt buy a DVD reader CD writer combo? Gotta be carefull when you buy these and read the details!

this situation is weird, if you have a writer reader drive, this should never have happened. check if your reader is indeed a writer or (burner) as well. plus your dvd may also be write protected, this unables you to copy documents or pictures from your computer to it.
first check with a shop or a programmer if what you have installed is a dvd writer. it may be a writer but only a cd type. THE TWO ARE NOT THE SAME. if it is, go try to buy a new dvd. that should help you.
and as for the software, nero should be able to do the trick.

Your need a DVD burner to burn DVDs
