We have a lot of lights for sure but not too many. I think we have the second most on our street but the house with the most has 10 times as many as we do.
We have some coloured lights on a tree in the garden, a light up reindeer on the roof, and coloured lanterns along the eaves of the house. Oh and a "Merry Christmas" lighted up in the porch. So that's like 4 things. Maybe slightly too many but not MAD by a long way. I guess the saving grace is that the house is a detached bungalow and as such has more room for lights before looking crowded.

I use to put just a few on some trees. I do enjoy seeing some of the displays that are done tastefully, but as you same some do go over the top and do look very tacky. Saw one the other day that with some other bits, actually had an illuminated nativity scene that was really lovely, and after all that is what it is all about. Happy Christmas.

Well, Emma, some things are tacky to some, and not to others. I have seemed a few places that are garish, but I figure it is the spirit of the season, so I somewhat enjoy their joy!

Happy Christmas to all in spite of those that light the house up like an airport tarmac!

We put up a few Christmas lights, but they're NOTHING compared to what we do at Hallowe'en. Thirteen skeletons... fog machine... graveyard... blacklights... zombies... you get the idea.
My oldest daughter, though, has a friend whose mom goes mad with Christmas lights in the manner you're describing. The saying is that "Christmas threw up on her house." The latest twist: one of those inflatable yard ornaments, in her case a snow globe with snowmen inside it.
We, on the other hand, have something indescribably beautiful this year, its soft, sinuous radiation lighting up our street every evening. Yes, it's the Major Award -- to see a picture, and to read a little about it, check the Sources field.
"Tonight, tonight, it's coming tonight, hot damn tonight!"

No. My mom has a wreath on our porch that isn't lit and that's all.
Our neighbors have TONS of those plastic figurines and inflatable things that annoy me to no end. But, I guess it's how they mean it that counts in the end. If it is just for competition then I don't see why they bother!
But if they do it because they are truly in the Christmas spirit, let them go ahead.
At least they have lights! Kids like it, even if no one else does (lol).

No i don't and i agree with you!....I think it's all about competetion..the more lights you have the higher the status..lol..or so they like to think.........
The house across the street looks like 'the red light district' with all it's flashing lights...i half expect to see the woman of the house standing in the window dressed in her undies.

i am afraid that my husbands last name should b griswald, but on his behalf, it is not his fault. he got it from me and i got it from my grandmother who was the 1st on her block, area and city and county to put up a life size choir, nativity and santa and sleigh with reindeer. She was even featured on the walter winchell show back in the 50s.
i guess it is just in the blood
