Carrying Chemicals Could be anything from contaminated water to strong Acids if carrying Flammables load must be planned to keep Chemicals that may react( if truck is involved in accident)separate
A list is carried in lorry cab by the driver who must be Qualified with a City and Guilds certificate which he must carry on a photograph licence Also only vehicle Operators must be Licenced by the environment protection agency. before they can carry any chemicals . If a driver tries to pick a load of chemicals up without having his Licence or even without orange plates he will be refused that load and should be reported.Fertiliser is classed as Haz chem also.Some Hospital waste also travels under Haz Chem Regulations,I.E. Radio Active Waste for which the driver must have this certificate also on his licence>

They are displayed on the Front and Rear of trucks carrying hazardous materials - as other answers have stated. The signs can be removed, or folded over when the truck is carrying normal loads. When the truck is carrying the hazardous material the driver also is required to have a data sheet for each chemical (called a TREM card) which can advise the emergency services exactly what is carried, how best to deal with and who to contact in case of an emergency. It's there to say it is carrying chemicals.
They will some times have one on the back to along with some numbers and symbols, You will more often than not find them on Lorry's carrying fuel.

It is a hazard warning. A plain one means low grade hazardous materials are being carried.
More dangerous goods show a four figure code and a pictogram indicating the material.
