Pistols (and all guns for that matter) have a huge range of muzzle velocities. 300 fps is on the slow end, and they go up to around 1500 fps.
A .45 ACP pistol has a muzzle velocity of around 300 feet per second.

Well, if we are talking about the INITIAL initial velocity, that would be zero.
On the other hand, the initial velocity as far as when is begins to decelerate, then that would be the specific muzzle velocity of the gun.

If you go to any website of an ammunition manufacturer you can get full ballistic information. You can get velocity and bullet size and the whole 9 yards. Common manufacturers include Remington, Winchester and Federal.

There's different velocities for different handguns, but...
9 mm = 1,180 ft/s (feet per second)
.357 magnum = 1,235 ft/s
