I think it's possible the Wii will outsell the xbox. Nintendo tends to attract many RPG fans, as well as young gamers. Plus with the Wii's new technology it will probably attract older gamers as well.

From a marketing point, the Wii has allure for a far wider audience. PS3, even more so than the XBox, has concentrated on advanced hardware to achieve better frame rates and 3d graphics. This will attract the more serious gamers.
From a business perspective, the fact that Nintendo is building a cheaper machine means that for every console sold they make a larger margin. Even though the XBox (and Microsoft has never made a profit off the console alone) and the PS3 have a higher price-tag, they cost more to manufacture than retail.
I don't think they (Microsoft or Sony) got it right with the HD DVD or the "media center" concept, I think consumers will still prefer to buy a console simply for games, and a separate unit for HD DVDs.
And, like you mentioned, the DS will help solidify Nintento's market share, as the PSP is just too expensive for most consumers looking for a portable system (why in the world they thought most consumers would be willing to pay to watch movies on a tiny screen, I don't know) - and, again, Nintendo really nailed it with the touch screen aspect to lure new consumers/gamers.

They are leasing a DVD Wii next year, but i don't think that its going to be HD, The Xbox 360 isn't doing very well in Japan, so as far as i know the Wii has probably already outsold the Xbox 360, here in America is another story, Gears of War made people buy the Xbox and when Halo 3 comes out more people are going to want to play it and that also sell more. The Wii is good right now, but if Nintendo doesn't make enough games for it people are going to be going back to Sony or Microsoft

Time will tell.. I think the XB360 is easily the most appealing of the consoles now to the most avid gamers with its reasonable price tag and state-of-the-art muscle behind it. PS3 has more power (on paper- but there isn't a massive difference between PS3 & XB360) the Wii is left behind with slightly better than GC graphics and the inventive controller (which doesn't strike me as being greatly efficient, and it could get chaotic with 4 peeps swinging them about frantically in a multiplayer, TVs will be smashed, peeps will get knocked out etc, lol). The Wii may get by on the promise of being new and exciting, but will it stand out in traditional gaming...? I personally doubt it'll be able to cope with the demand for the new, more advanced games being released for the more powerful rivals.
Truely time will tell though.

Nintendo is clever. It knew it couldnt compete with Sony and Microsoft for graphics. So it goes with the game pad to make the gamer feel more involved with gaming. Also its way cheaper and a lot of parents who cant afford Sony and Microsoft will obvisiously go for this over xmas period.
