How many of you have still not got their decs up yet? What is the purpose of hanging decorations, and when did it start. How many of you know that they should be put up on the1st day being Christmas eve, and taking down on the 6th January being the 12th day of christmas. That some people gave a present on everyday of the 12 days. We did for our children growing up as it gave them something to look forward to everyday. We still put ours up as near as possible, due to the fact we are not as young as we were and takes longer each year.

arch: To each his own. With time being at a premium in this age of the Nuclear Family, I believe each has to do with what ever time he / she can muster. The idea you present would be kinda neat ... considering family was more valued like it was years ago, over our personal pursuits. Merry Christmas to you and your family !!!

When I was little my mom would never put the tree or decorations up until Christmas eve, it was a tradition and we all got to hang baubles in our turn and each year we took it in our turn to put the angel on the top of the tree, I miss doing that, but I always do my tree and decoration on the 15th of December for some reason and always take them down on January 5th which is the true twelfth night.

Xmas decorations started with the Victorians and in fact it was Prince Albert who brought the first Xmas tree to the UK for decorating. We used to put our tree up on Christmas Eve but there's so much to do it's not really practical. If it were up to the retailers we'd be decorating our homes on 1st September!!

I bugged my hubby to get them up early this year. He did, too. Most folks in the little town we live in decorate their yards and homes a lot, for all major holidays.

Artificial tree in the post office lobby stays up all year. Decorated for Valentine's Day, for Easter, for St Patricks Day, for Independance Day, for October Harvest Festival, and for Christmas. Fun to watch the decorations change on it.

I love the decorations. Love to drive around the town, looking at the lights. Makes me feel happy.

Christmas Decorations make people happy. They want to be happy all month long leading up to Christmas. Not everyone knows or follows original traditions. Whatever makes people happy they should do.

Speaking as I put up my decorations in November.

I do believe that the tradition of the Xmas tree and decorations started with the Victorians and we have been stuck with the damn things ever since.

I don't think there is "proper way or day" to do these things. People seem to flow according to their enthusiasm. I am all for it, including havin the decorations up for a month!
