The name "Santa Claus" is how the natives of his hometown in Turkey pronouced the name "Saint Nicklaus" - and of course was mis-spelled and hence the name became popular that way.

While he was alive centuries ago, during Christmas time, there was a ceremony called the Boy Bishop ceremony. He used to be dressed in the Boy Bishop garb, which is red robes with white and gold trim and a white hat with white trim, and driven around town on a sleigh driven by raindeer. He used to give out gold to all the citizens of the town - which was a tradition of his family because they were very wealthy and believe in giving back to those that made their wealth possible - the lay people.

He never went down any chimneys. That part of the story, and the part where he lives in the North Pole came about from mixing the Santa Claus tale with the German tales of Father Christmas and Old Man Winter.

The green mittens Santa Claus wears comes from the green full body underwear that everyone wore back then in Saint Nicklaus' home village.

I think that Saint Nicholas is the saint of gifts in the Catholic denomination (if my memory serves me right). There was actually a man that gave gifts to the less fortunate. This is where the "spirit" of holiday gift giving is derrived from.

Christmas, as the holiday itself, is not necessarily about exchanging gifts, it's more about the birth of Christ.... although research shows that Jesus was actually born in September.

Realistically.... nobody (especially a fat man, at that), could fit down a chimney flute. They are not wide enough, and there are no scaling devices inside a chimney flute to get back up it.

Seriously though, your parents are your Santa Clauses. They are the ones spending money and "threatening" that Santa won't bring you gifts if you act up.

Merry Christmas!

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING---that Santa is alive and well. Just go shopping and try to find a parking space.

HOW GREAT HE IS in the minds and hearts of many living, hoping, screaming, beautiful children, and the loving parents who relish the idea of playing SANTA to their precious children, and their friends and relatives.

SANTA in the hearts of so many can't be dead or unreal. It's a beautiful thought--Santa coming to bring presents while little children sleep (and sometimes peek), and parents struggle to get it all laid out....

GOSH, there's more life, more real there than in many other things in this World. I say he's real. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks for reminding me of the hectic, wonder filled shopping days when my 4 children were young (and I was younger, too).

Don't be a dark cloud on the brightest night...when the Star of Bethlehem shines for all the World to see.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

The concept of a grown geriatric white man going down chimneys and entering your home while you are sleeping, and he knows when you are sleeping and awake.Sounds illegal. There is no such thing as Santa Claus there is no Sled, no delivery of thousands of presents througout one night for millions of kids.He is not real.

santa claus is not real. there was a man named saint nicholas who was very jolly and giving and that's where they got the concept of "santa claus". all the presents bought to you are from your parents and relatives. saint nicholas is dead and when he was alive he did not go down chimneys and give presents...
