You aint even close! A modem hooks you to the internet, a router allows you to hook more than one PC to your single internet connection (router connects between modem and PCs), it also allows you to share files between your PCs. To the others that dont have a clue! A router does not connect you to the internet! It networks your PCs! The modem makes your internet connection!

A router is actually much different than that. A modem allows you to connect to the internet. A router allows you to create a network. A network allows several computer to share an internet connection, files, printers and other devices connected to each computer. There are also wireless access point routers these allow you to create a network wirelessly but you have to by special adapters for PC's to do this. You can get more information about routers on the netgear website they are a large manufacturer of routers

The device that connects you to the Internet is a modem.

A router acts as a junction between two or more networks to transfer data packets among them. A router is different from a switch. A switch connects devices to form a local area network (LAN).

One easy illustration for the different functions of routers and switches is to think of switches as neighborhood streets, and the router as the intersections with the street signs. Each house on the street has an address within a range on the block. In the same way, a switch connects various devices each with their own IP address(es) on a LAN.

However, the switch knows nothing about IP addresses except its own management address. Routers connect networks together the way that on-ramps or major intersections connect streets to both highways and freeways, etc. The street signs at the intersection (routing table) show which way the packets need to flow........

Yes, a router is the box that connects to the Internet. There are direct plug and wireless versions. The wireless ones have an antenna that sticks up in the back. You can use a wireless card in your laptop to connect to this type of router. The other type is for direct wired access. Hope this helps.

A device that determines the next network point to which a data packet should be forwarded enroute toward its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks and determines which way to send each data packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to. Routers create or maintain a table of the available routes and use this information to determine the best route for a given data packet

A router is the one you plug your computer, it can be a router/modem or not. A modem is the box to where the cable/dsl comes to.
Your router can be wireless or not.
