Down: It's equally inconvenient for everyone that way. ;-)
(And, frankly, it looks a lot better that way, too!)

As a guy, currently girlfriend challenged, I leave both the lid and seat up simply for my own convenience. When I was living with a woman, I always left the lid up and the seat down as a convenience for her. I do not have pets at the moment, but when I did (or my lady friend did) we always put the lid down to prevent the animals from taking a drink. By the way, the amount of evaporation (lid up or lid down) only changes by a miniscule, insignificant amount. Leaving the lid down does NOT save water.
One thing I've never understood is why some women don't "look before they leap" so to speak, and end up on the cold porceline (sp?)... Inquiring minds want to know...

You should always put the lid down before flushing and keep it that way. When you flush particles of toilet water become airborne and can fly up onto your toothbrush etc. Yuck! Keeping the lid down helps to stop this. Also, keeping the lid down is good feng shui, leaving the toilet open sucks wealth from your home, and who can't use more wealth??

what bonnie said... but i do put the seat down most of the time(at home) i have sat in the water at night thinking the seat was down so it helps me too you could say. I grew up with dogs that drank out of the toilets so the lids/seats were always up. however small it would be closed lid would reduce evaporation and retard algae growth ..lol (have you ever open/closed a pool)

I saw on discovery channel they were doing the test on how far the toilet will splatter when flushed...it really was amazing...keeping both the lid and seat down also eliminates the man and woman argument of who has to do the most work of playing with the seat....everyone has to lift and put down

I think the best way is to keep the lid up when not in use. Imagine your shock if you go in the middle of the night and the lid is down. Ya better like cleaning. Of course it is best to keep the seat down. There is nothing worse than sitting on freezing cold porcelain in the middle of the night. Or having your kid fall in. It happened to my son when he was 2 and he was really mad at the guy who left the seat up.

any properly house trained gentelman knows to raise the seat before use and put it back down after use. the lid is optional, if the toilet flushes properly it is quite acceptable to leave it open, with the seat down. ofcourse if the toilet does not function properly it is the opinion of mr. manners that it would be rude indeed to leave the lid open.

Down. If you put it down after you use it, you're not touching anyone's pee but your own. If you leave it for the next person, then they have to touch the nastiness. It's common courtesy to put the seat down after you use the toilet.
P.S.
Please do not try to make bank shots.
Unless... did you say the LID? In that case, it's more convenient for everyone if you just leave it up. Putting it down and up over and over just seems unnecesary. You never know when you'll be in a rush.
Wait, nevermind. Stacey C had a better answer. Touche.

Seat down, lid up. When I go in a bathroom and find the lid down, I can't help being a little afraid to open it....like...what am I going to find in there? LOL!

Since I decorate my toilet lid, I like it down between uses.
