In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the 500th anniversary of the death of Nearly Headless Nick is being celebrated. Nick was killed in 1492. So, 500 years from that would set Year 2 at Hogwarts at 1992. All other calculations are made from that one date.

Harry James Potter (born 31 July 1980)
Ronald Bilius "Ron" Weasley (born 1 March 1980)
Hermione Jane Granger (b. 19 September 1979)
Potter's parents were killed Oct 31, 1981, when Harry was a baby so the stories begin 1992 when Harry turned 11.
Excellent reading on the timeline at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_%28character%29

Other than HP's, which is in the first book, the birthdays are scattered (you find out when they get presents or talk about when they will turn 16).
You can figure out that book 2 is in 1992 because it was Nearly Headless Nick's 500th deathday party and they give you the date of death: 1492, just like Columbus. Otherwise, you don't get references to give you the date of occurrence (at least that I have been able to find!). So, book 7 will start in 1997.

I believe in the third book reference to Hermione's birthday is mentioned (September), and Ron's in the sixth (March?).
The time period for the stories makes sense, because Harry first came to JKR's mind around the beginning of that time frame. That is how she imagined them.

In the Goblet of Fire whatever. It tells how old they are because Harry was to young to be apart of the turnament. So go read that book its really good and the movie didnt give it enough justice.

I don't remember years being mentioned for their birth dates. In fact, there aren't really any identifying events that would pinpoint the time of the story. Helps project the idea of the separate magical world.

They don't have specific years listed in the books, that was it can be mroe of a "it's happening right now!" sortof thing going on. They just made up those years I think. And also...why do you care?
