I own a tanning salon.

All the tanning haters need to understand that ANY overexposure to sunlight CAN contribute to the development of cancer,...and that the majority of your damage happens in the burn, peel, burn, peel, burn cycle. If you allow that to happen to yourself, you can look like a piece of beef jerky regardless of where you get your exposure.

Typically, a tanning bed will have a much lower percentage of UVB - your burner - than being outside. Period.

If you want to tan yourself quicker, use a lotion with a bronzer in it. Slough the skin well with a scrub and moisturize the hell outta yourself before application. Put it on evenly - none of that sloppy rub it up the front of your arms and forget the back...it can look bad if your bronzer is strong enough.

Above all - if you tan, tan sensibly for god's sake. Don't try to tan yourself black...slow and steady. And there's really no need to tan every freaking day - even I get pissy when I see the tanorexics come in every day.

Try the spray on tan. They do this at a lot of salons and most people that have it done really like it. It would be safer for your skin and you won't have to burn. Also, when you burn that is what damages your skin and the less damage now the better you will look when you get older. Tanning is especially dangerous for people that do not tan easily, so be careful. I have had a small skin cancer removed and it is no picnic and it is scary. It was on my face!!! I love the sun, being tanned. and being outside, but now I try to make sure I use my sunscreen. I tan very easily, but I don't want any more skin cancer. Try the spray on tan. Not sure how long it last, but if you want a tan for a special occasion it would be worth it. Also, some of the self tanners are pretty good, just follow the directions.
