First off - I'd suggest simply installing the drive as added drive space... you'd have two hard drives and a great deal more capacity.

That said - I take it that your system didn't have a means to create recovery disks? Most computer shipped in the last 5 years included an application that allows a user to create the recovery media on CD or DVD... if you do have that capacity, simply create the disks (CD or DVD), swap hard drives, and run the recovery per the instructions. You'll end up with a factory default install.

Another option is a drive upgrade kit - these include the components you need to transfer data from your old drive to your new drive.

Yet another option is running a back up utility like Norton Ghost. This allows you to back up your current hard drive, swap in the new drive, and then restore your operating system and data to the new drive.

Just a few suggestions.

turn off your computer "MAKE SURE YOUR POWER CABLE IS UNPLUGGED". install your drive give it power. then start up your computer go to control panel> click administrative tools> click computer management> click disk management and format that drive with the ntsf file system.
