You could consider Saga magazine, if he doesn't have a subscription already. It is a monthly magazine and they will post it to you anywhere. There are a few puzzles in it to keep the brain nimble and it would be perfect for an elderly person. http://www.saga.co.uk/publishing/

most mazines have an address in them to order a subscription as a present. my mother in law gets readers digest every month as a gift from her cousin
