depends mostly on how reliable your car is, and what time of year.

In winter, mountain routes can face heavy snows, and even the odd avalanche, so you should so south first, and then cross the desert on I-10 or I-40.

In summer, the desert heat can be hard on an older car; you travel mostly at night or take a northern route.

It's not dangerous it's just a long drive! Make sure that you have company, or if you are driving alone make a few stops along the way to get plenty of rest. If you go through Texas it has great scenery and the roads are nice to drive on too. But the problem with the southern route is that is it very bare. It's beautiful scenery wise but not much out there.

I've drove from Cali to Illinois and it's fine. You can by pass most mountains. Get a road atlas and it will tell you whether there are mountains or not so you can plan your trip around it. It'll be fun good luck.

It is dangerous to drive any where out of town. Just be careful.
