No, a three week old baby should have nothing but breastmilk or formula, per the AAP. Giving your infant water will make them take in less breastmilk/formula which means less calories. This can result in poor weight gain (and sometimes even weight loss). It can also harm your milk supply. Babies need calories to grow and water doesn't give them any, so you're filling up their tummy but not giving them what they need if you give water.

PLUS.....there is a condition called "water intoxication" which can be pretty serious if a young baby gets too much water.

Actually it is not a good idea to give an infant water. Too much water in anyone's system can cause kidney damage, because it is too much for a body to process. The amount that the baby get's from the formula is fine. If you think your baby might be dehydrated, take him/her to the doctor right away.

The real question is why would you want to? Everything that the baby needs they are getting from either nursing or their formula. The formula will keep them well hydrated so you do not need and shouldn't give them water

just had a baby in august, and he had bad hiccups. At his 2 week check up i was told it is safe to have water now. He may not like the taste too much but he will get used to it. Also the pediatrician told me if he was having trouble pooping, i could give him some water with a teaspoon of karo. My baby is 4 months now, and he has water. Its good for them because you know they will stay hydrated. Good luck and congrats!!

There's really no need to give your infant water at this point. They're getting everything they need through formula or breastmilk. If you're thinking about giving your baby water b/c of constipation problems, consult your child's pediatrician.

Unless there is a medical reason for your child not to have water, it's perfectly fine. What I mean by that is my son after having surgery, could not drink by mouth for a couple of weeks, so had to have an IV. I would, however, make sure you get distilled water for your baby, as it is purified. Just like with adults, babies need water too, and formula or breast milk only goes so far.

My son's pediatrician avised against it. He said that everything my son would need is supplied by either formula or breastmilk. It wasn't encouraged to give until he turns 6 months, and even then they were talking 4-6 oz. a day.

I would get advice from your child's pediatricia.

They do not need it. Babies should only be given breastmilk or formula for the first 6 months of life. Ideally, breastmilk.

Yes you can. It won't harm them...I never heard of a baby OD'ing on water...

I have a 2 month old and he has been drinking water since he was 2 weeks old.

Good Luck and Congrats!!

no.and why do you want to? Water in formula is fine but if the baby is breastfed she doesn't need water.
