I am 6 weeks pregnant. This is my first pregnancy and we really want this baby. My obgyn made my appointment when I am 9 weeks along.

They said they will do blood work, a full exam and possibly may do a vaginal ultrasound at my 9 week appointment.

I need to know if obgyns typically check for a heart beat at the first appointment. If I knew the baby had a heart beat I would stop worrying because I am going crazy not knowing the baby is okay.

At your first prenatal appointment did they check for a heart beat? How far along were you?

I had my first ultrasound at 10 weeks to check if the baby's heart was beating. A few weeks before that, my doctor took a blood test to determine the hcg count. Don't worry so much--you can always ask your doctor to check the baby's heartbeat at the appointment--I'm sure he'll be happy to do it to soothe your nerves. Good luck!

Congratulations!
My very first appointment was a consultation with an OB Nurse at about 7 weeks. I had to fill out a folder full of paperwork and I had blood work done. I was 11 weeks at my second appointment. I heard my baby's heart beat and they did a vaginal ultrasound. From what I understood, they do check for a heart beat at your first appointment (not including the initial consultation), it is just not gauranteed that you will hear one. Your baby does have one, it is just very faint. It took my OB about 10 minutes to find it before we heard the heart beating. Don't worry too much, just listen to your body and contact your OB if have any questions.
God bless

No they did not check-I was about 9 or 10 weeks.I did not see the heart beat until I had the 12 weeks ultrasound-which I only had because I had been bleeding some.
My friend just had her 1st appointment at 10 weeks and they tried to hear the heart beat and nothing was there-but the OB says the baby is more then likely ok because he said usually you cannot hear the heart beat until after the 1st trimester.I am sure your baby is just fine!

I didn't get a vaginal ultrasound at my first appt., but I did get to hear the heartbeat. Then again, I went to a Choctaw Indian hospital, and my ultrasound wasn't until I was 3 months along.

At my first appointment which was at 8wks I did not have an ultrasound but they wanted me to schedule an ultrasound. I had an ultrasound at 8wks 5 days and did see a heartbeat. They say by 6wks you should be able to see a heartbeat on an ultrasound. So if you have an ultrasound you should be able to see it.. Congrats & Good Luck!!

they should be able to, especially if they are doing a vaginal ultrasound.
vaginal ultrasounds show much more than abdominal, especially in the beginning.
i saw the heart beat of my baby at 6w6d, and 10w6d...in the beginning, it's just a blinking dot...soo cute though.
