I want to delete temporary cookies, so I went to Tools and chose Internet Options as I usually do,
but this time it says I can't access it due to restrictions on my computer and I should contact my administrator - what's that all about? This is my own computer and I'm the only person ever to use it!
How do I sort this out please?

I don't have an administrator account - I don't use a password or username to log on ...
I live by myself and no one has been here in ages, so it can't be anyone else!

Like most people, you never set a password on the administrator's account. Probably never even knew you should, or how it's done. Without proper security, it's relatively easy to hack into your computer once you're online, take control of the administrator account (with a blank password) and take over your computer.
It's also possible Windows hiccupped and thrashed your account's security settings. It's also possible there is another error with file permissions, etc. It's most likely that you've been infected with malware that has taken your internet explorer hostage.
First, go to control panel/user accounts. Check the properties of your user account. Make sure you are an administrator. Then click each account, and change the password. Make it relatively complex.
Second, get a good antivirus and antispyware program (AVG is good, and free). Sweep your system for malware.
If you still have a problem, e-mail with details.

Your computer will have an Adminstrator Account by default. If you are the only one to have ever used this computer then you as a "user" should have the same privileges as the administrator..& you would never know that there was a difference.
However, for some reason, you as the "user" have lost your administrator privileges, but it can be sorted out.
In Windows XP, the Administrator account is not usually listed on the login screen. But you can still log into it,... by rebooting into 'Safe Mode'. Press F8 when Windows begins to boot, and you'll be given a list of boot options, one of which is 'Safe Mode'. Select that, and the 'Administrator' account will now appear on the login screen.
Now you can log in as 'Administrator':
Once you are logged in as Administrator:
* Right-click on My Computer
* Click on Manage
* Expand Local Users and Groups
* Click on Groups
* Double click on Administrators..check to see if your normal username is shown there...if not then
* Click on Add
* Enter the account/user name on this machine that you want to assign administrative privileges to
* OK your way back out.
Now reboot your machine normally, and the account you selected should now have administrative access.
PS
Lastly, if you want to set a password for the Administrator, right click my computer again click on "manage" again, & expand "Local users & Groups", then click on Users, then in the box to the right, ..right click on "administrator" & click on "set password".
Also do a full anti virus & spyware/malware scan & clean.
Good luck

curiously you at the on the spot are not on the widely used administrative account. You were on as an administrator confident sufficient or you need to not have set the limitations. yet to do what you want to must you be logged in because the unique administrator IE: the guy who put in the operating equipment. in case you recognize the installers password swap to that account.
